Obituary.17

From the Times :-
"COLONEL SWINHOE
A GREAT ENTOMOLOGIST
Colonel Charles Swinhoe, F.L.S., F.Z.S., F.E.S., late of the Bombay Staff Corps, the distinguished authority on Indo-Malayan and other Asiatic lepidoptera, died at his residence, Avonmore-road, West Kensington, on Sunday, at the age of 86.
Born on August 29, 1836, he entered the Army as an ensign in the 56th Regiment in his 19th year, and was just too late in reaching the Crimea to see any fighting. He arrived in India shortly after the Mutiny and joined the Bombay Staff Corps. Though he kept mainly to the military side, he saw little war service apart from the second Afghan War, in which he was with Lord Roberts in Kandahar. His absorbing hobby was entomology, and in Bombay and Poona he reared many specimens. He was an indefatigable collector, and was visited by investigators from many countries, and notably by Americans. A count made in 1913 showed his collection (since augmented) of heterocera - Indo-Malayan, Australian, Chinese and Japanese - comprised 431 types and 540 co-types, nearly 7,000 species, and over 40,000 specimens. He was most methodical in upkeep. The collection is arranged in scientific order, every species being numbered and recorded in a ledger, with full references and localities, and there are also numerous genitalia. Colonel Swinhoe also collected a remarkable museum of diurnal lepidoptera. In collaboration with Mr. Moore he compiled the first five volumes of "Lepidoptera Indica", the remaining five volumes being his exclusive work. This monumental survey, issued at the price of GBP90, is illustrated by hundreds of coloured plates, and comprises every known butterfly from India, Burma, and Ceylon. Colonel Swinhoe also contributed extensively to the transactions and memoirs of the Entomological Society and other learned bodies. When he retired from the Indian Army some 30 years ago he made his home at Oxford, where the university conferred upon him the honorary M.A. degree. He was also an honorary member of the Entomological Society of Franc. He was well-known until far advanced in life as a lecturer on such subjects as the mimicry of lepidoptera. Coming later to London, he pursued his studies with unabated zest, and was a familiar figure at the Natural History Museum. As recently as last winter and spring he was busy contributing to the 'Annals and Magazine of Natural History', "A Revision of the Genera of the Family Laparidae", covering no fewer than 1,130 detailed entries. It showed that a number of species had been wrongly referred to the family. His scientific work was brought to an end by a stroke last August, when he was entering his 87th year.
Colonel Swinhoe, who lost his wife some years ago, leaves two married daughters and a son, Mr. C. D. Swinhoe, a district engineer of the G.I.P. Railway. The funeral is at Kensal Green Cemetery this morning at 10.30."

From the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer :-
"Colonel Charles Swinhoe, F.L.S., F.Z.S., F.E.S., a distinguished authority on Indo-Malayan and other Asiatic lepidoptera, died in London on Sunday.
Born in 1836, he entered the Amy in his 19th year, but saw little war service. Arriving in India shortly after the Mutiny, he joined the Bombay Staff Corps. As an entomologist he was an indefatigable collector, and a count made in 1914 revealed the fact that his collection comprised over 40,000 specimens. He contributed extensively to the transactions and memoirs of the Entomological Society and other learned bodies. On his retirement some 30 years ago the University of Oxford conferred upon him the honorary degree of M.A. He was also an honorary member of the Entomological Society of France. His chief work lay in his collaboration with Mr. Moore in the compilation of "Lepidoptera Indica," the last five volumes of which were exclusively his own work.
Co. Swinhoe leaves two married daughters and a son."
